Maine holds a special place in the imagination. Its natural beauty is inspiration to artists and writers. Its allure entices millions of visitors every year from around the world.
But the Maine Center for Creativity views Maine as more than a pretty place. The center is part of a ‘velvet revolution’ that’s energizing the state’s economy.
Maine’s ‘creative economy’ is all about innovation and talent – and leveraging them as a vital economic resource for driving industry. It’s about good paying jobs that support industry and services – and improving the state’s quality of life. It’s about the power of creativity benefitting Maine – through unique arts-and-industry collaborations.
The Maine Center for Creativity’s mission is to create projects and programs that promote the arts and stimulate the growth of Maine’s creative industries and professions.
They do this by:
1) Creating high-visibility projects that capture the imagination and foster the art of the possible
2) Creating programming and networking that support people working in the creative industries
3) Stimulating innovative enterprise through regional, national and international connections, partnerships and educational initiatives
We’ve all seen the amazing oil tanks art by the jetport, the result of MCC’s Art All Around program. We’ve read about Glenn Close and David Shaw winning MCC’s inaugural award for their contributions to Maine’s creative economy. Those projects are not nearly all of what MCC does.
Jean Maginnis, Executive Director, and Katherine Greenleaf, Board President, will talk with us about the economic importance of bringing business and the creative community together.
KATHERINE M. GREENLEAF is an experienced consultant and senior executive with a law degree and extensive business experience in organization development, executive development, ledership and innovation. She has senior executive experience in financial services, retailing, and human resources. She serves as a member of the faculty at Gestalt International Study Center and has substantial experience serving on the board of directors in financial services and non-profit organizations.
Mrs. Greenleaf is currently the President of Greenleaf Consulting Group, a successful management consulting practice specializing in linking business strategy with organizational structure and change management with human resource development. She facilitates leadership by accessing business needs, developing business strategies and translating them into operational plans and goals.
She currently serves as the chair of the Board of Directors of the Maine Center for Creativity, Chair of the Govenance Committee at the Gestalt International Study Center, Advisor to the Board at the University of Maine School of Law, and Chair of the Governance Committee and member of the Human Resource and Compensation Committee of the Maine Employers Mutual Insurance Company.
Her past professional board experience includes serving as the Board Chair of Wright Express Financial Services Corporation, the Chair of the Governance Committee and Compensation and HR Committee at TD Banknorth, and the Chairperson of Compensation and HR at Martin’s Point Health Care.
Mrs. Greenleaf received her Bachelor of Arts with Honors in Asian Studies from Connecticut College and her law degree from Boston University Law School.
JEAN MAGINNIS has spent the past six years advocating for the support and stimulation of Maine’s creative industries by working collaboratively with business leaders through the Maine Center for Creativity, a 501 © 3 organization she founded. Her organization created Art All Around™, an international design competition that received 560 proposals from 80 countries to paint art on the above ground storage tanks owned by Sprague in the Port of Portland. The goal of Art All Around is to put Maine on the map for creativity and innovation. She has raised $950,000 toward the completion of this arts and industry collaboration. Currently, the Board of Directors are in their final phase of fundraising toward a goal of $350,000.
Art All Around is the largest public art painting project in the world and the first public art project planned with satellite view in mind. The Maine Center for Creativity runs professional development programs to support creative industries and future growth of creativity here in Maine. Her professional experience includes working for WGBH, Boston's public television and radio stations as well as Development and Membership work for both the Portland Museum of Art and the Children’s Museum of Maine. She also worked for major Advertising agencies in Maine where most recently she was a Senior Marketing Strategist. She has managed the advertising strategic planning and brand development for a number of large companies. In 2007, Ms. Maginnis graduated from the Institute for Civic Leadership course focused on collaborative leadership. Ms. Maginnis was appointed to the Governor’s Creative Economy Council in 2005 and served on the Board of Directors at the Portland Players in South Portland, the oldest community theater in Maine from 2004-2007. Recently, her organization was presented with a special award for Creative Enterprise by the advertising club of Maine. In 2011, Jean was asked to speak at the National American for the Arts Convention in San Diego and in New York City at Lincoln Center Institute for the Imagination Conversation initiative. She is married and has two sons. Jean graduated from Boston College cum laude with a degree in Communications.
