Hear all about it: Maine is about to become a top national center for entrepreneurship.

Maine’s economy is dominated by small businesses and aspiring innovators, so interactions between entrepreneurs and consultants are common yet pose a host of issues that need to be thoughtfully addressed. This talk will address these issues in the context of MCED’s work: our business incubation, Campus Ventures and Top Gun entrepreneurship acceleration programs; our historic and emerging relationship with ACE; the implications of Blackstone Accelerates Growth, Innovation Engineering and “incubator in the cloud” for the future. Issues discussed will include: what is the proper role of free services for entrepreneurs vs. the private sector? How can consultants build relationships and appropriately offer "try before you buy" with cash-challenge start-ups?
Don Gooding was a telecommunications market analyst and venture capitalist for fifteen years, founded and ran a global specialty music business for sixteen years, and has invested as an angel since the late 1990s. As Research Partner for Accel Partners (1986-1996), he investigated new telecom and networking markets, finding and evaluating new investment opportunities. Don authored a monthly column in Communications Week, was co-chair of the annual Accel/Stanford Center for Telecommunications Symposium, and was the first webmaster in the venture capital industry. He worked closely with companies such as UUNET, Teleos, Clear Communications and PictureTel. Later, as the "mogul of a cappella," he built the largest source of a cappella music in the world in Southwest Harbor Maine. As a member of Maine Angels he has invested in early stage technology companies, including Ocean Renewable Power Company, Emergent Music, Axon Labs, Neuroptix and IW Financial. Don received his B.A. from Yale University cum laude with distinction in Economics in 1981, concentrating on the economics of data transmission.
