My View of Maine:
From the Editor’s Dais!

Peter Van Allen, joined Mainebiz as the editor in April 2014.  Peter has the opportunity to visit businesses from York County to The County, as well as regions of Downeast and western Maine. He speaks with leaders of businesses large and small, and elected officials. His remarks, coming after a career of working on the eastern seaboard in Philadelphia and New York City, as well as Gary, Ind., will no doubt ring a bell with many in Maine. But a few of his observations may surprise you!

Join Peter Van Allen, Mainebiz Editor, and ACE for his view of Maine!  Snapshots from the Editor’s desk.

About Our Speaker:

Peter Van Allen spent 25-plus years as a business reporter and editor, working for the Gannett-owned Courier-Post in Cherry Hill, N.J. and the Post-Tribune in Gary, Ind., when it was owned by Knight Ridder; Thomson's American Banker in NYC; and American City Business Journals' Philadelphia Business Journal, where he spent 15 years covering hospitality/tourism, media/marketing, conventions, casinos and a whole lot of other fun stuff.

At Mainebiz, he oversees a small but dedicated staff. He encourages them to get on the road and visit companies-- putting the "Maine" in Mainebiz. Peter lives in Yarmouth with his wife, Jen, a freelance writer, and their son Noah. They have two daughters in college.

Roundtable Details

Takes place from 9:45-10:30 following the regular meeting and is optional

What Happens When Your Contract Takes a Left Turn…and What To Do about It

Left TurnHave you ever had your client surprise you with an unexpected decision?  Many of us have!  As consultants we are called on to “look around the corner” in our client organizations to anticipate possible outcomes of our (and their) actions.  Even so, our clients can still do the unexpected.  Then we must be oh-so-nimble to adjust our well thought out plans.

Come participate in this engaging Roundtable discussion.  Some of our ACE colleagues will share stories of having clients throw their plans off course.  Then participants will discuss options for how to respond.  Finally, the presenters will describe the actions they took and the outcomes that resulted.

You will leave this discussion with:

  • Recognition that you are not the only one this can happen to
  • New lenses for viewing difficult situations
  • A range of options should your client surprise you
